  • Air assist. It clears debris and reduces scorch marks. Skip this and you'll fight burned edges on almost every cut.
  • A rotary attachment. Needed for cups, bottles, and pens. Get the one the manufacturer makes, not a generic 'universal' one, unless you're ready to troubleshoot software.
  • A honeycomb bed. Better airflow under the work piece and fewer small scraps falling into the machine.

If you cut a lot of sheet goods, a simple roller table outside the machine is more useful than another expensive attachment. The rest can wait. (Mental note: I still have a 'laser-safe' rubber stamp kit in a drawer that I've never opened.)

A new 3D laser engraving machine costs less to start, has a gentler learning curve, and handles a wider variety of materials, but it will not mark steel quickly.

But don't buy a fiber laser just because 'fiber is the future.' It is the future for marking metals and hard plastics. It's not the future for cutting a large acrylic sign. That's still a CO2 or diode job.
