The floor drain had been slow for weeks. I'd noticed, and I'd told myself I'd call someone. Then I got busy, and the mental note stayed a mental note. Now it was a health hazard, and the CEO's client visit was less than 36 hours away.

That same morning, two other things landed on my desk. The sales team forwarded another complaint about office air quality—dust, sneezing, the works. Our ducts were long overdue for cleaning. I didn't tell him how close we'd come.

So, how do I feel about the $750?

Mixed, honestly. It stings knowing I could have avoided most of it with better planning. The printer should have been replaced in January. The duct cleaning should have been scheduled on a regular cycle. The drain should have been serviced when I first noticed it slowing down. All of that was on me.
